“Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that our beloved ‘coach’ peacefully passed away, surrounded by family. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained proved insurmountable,” stated the family.

“Throughout this journey, your kind words, memories, and love provided great comfort to both Buddy and our family. We are truly grateful for your support,” expressed the family.

“This news is devastating for Dartmouth and the entire football community. Buddy was not only an icon of Dartmouth football, but also a beloved coach and a visionary leader who positively impacted the lives of countless students,” said Dartmouth president Sian Leah Beilock and director of athletics Mike Harrity in a letter to the Dartmouth community.

According to the school, the incident occurred when Teevens’ bike was hit by a pickup truck. The school described it as an “accident.” In updates about his condition shared by Teevens’ wife Kirsten in April, it was revealed that he had to undergo the amputation of his right leg and suffered spinal cord injuries.

Teevens dedicated 22 seasons to coaching Dartmouth, following his successful career as a quarterback for the Big Green, where he received Ivy League Player of the Year honors in 1978.

“Buddy was nationally recognized for his commitment to making football safer. Through his innovative training techniques, the Thayer School of Engineering developed the Mobile Virtual Player, a robotic tackling dummy utilized by various college programs and NFL teams,” highlighted the letter from Beilock and Harrity.

Following Tuesday’s practice, Interim Head Coach Sammy McCorkle informed the team of Teevens’ passing.

Dartmouth has confirmed that it will proceed with its scheduled game against Lehigh on Saturday and will pay tribute to Teevens throughout the 2023 football season.

“There will be a moment of silence before the game and a gathering afterward to remember Buddy. Dartmouth also plans to honor his legacy in the coming weeks and months with the input of the Teevens family,” announced the school.
