Daniel Wu is now starring in the action-dramedy “American Born Chinese,” bringing Gene Luen Yang’s popular graphic novel to life on screen and introducing the exciting comedy to a wider audience. This series is currently streaming on Disney+. The story follows Jin Wang, a teenager (played by Ben Wang) navigating his high school life while trying to fit in against the wishes of his more traditional parents (Yeo Yann Yann and Chin Han).

Everything changes for Jin when he meets Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), a Chinese immigrant with a secret: he is the son of the magical Monkey King (played by Wu) and he needs Jin’s help. Alongside an incredible cast that includes Sydney Taylor, Michelle Yeoh, and Ke Huy Quan, the adaptation by Kelvin Yu integrates three disparate storylines, bringing them together in a seamless way.

For Wu, it was important to showcase Asian culture, particularly through the iconic Monkey King character, and reveal who our superheroes were and still are. Wu found a personal connection to the Monkey King, highlighting the challenges of being a father. He saw parallels between his parenting experiences and the character’s struggle to balance responsibility and career.

The universal themes in “American Born Chinese” resonate with parents and audiences of all ages, providing an opportunity for families to watch and enjoy the show together. With stunning visuals and gravity-defying fight scenes, the series combines action, heart, and humor. Wu cherishes his collaboration with Michelle Yeoh, calling it a dream come true after years of wanting to work together.

This screen adaptation brings the beloved graphic novel to life in a way that captivates viewers, immersing them in the unique storytelling style of Chinese action cinema. The camera becomes a part of the action, allowing the audience to feel involved and connected to the narrative.
