Daniel Theis Set to Join LA Clippers Following Pacers Buyout, Sources Confirm

Indiana Pacers center Daniel Theis has reached a contract buyout, paving the way for his forthcoming signing with the LA Clippers as a free agent, sources informed ESPN on Wednesday.

Theis is anticipated to clear waivers by Friday and will be able to join the Clippers, a team currently struggling with six consecutive losses following the acquisition of James Harden.

Upon joining the Clippers, Theis is expected to address the team’s need for frontcourt size while they await the return of backup center Mason Plumlee from a sprained MCL in his right knee. With $7.8 million remaining on his $9.1 million contract with the Pacers, Theis will be signing a prorated veteran minimum of $2.1 million, according to sources.

Sources have revealed that the Clippers will have 15 guaranteed roster spots, including two-way guard Josh Primo, who is set to sign a standard NBA contract through 2024-2025.

Theis, 31, made an appearance in one game for the Pacers this season but fell out of the frontcourt rotation on a young team known for playing at a high tempo. Over his career spanning seven seasons with the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, and Pacers, Theis has averaged 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Theis’ most noteworthy postseason performance came during his time with the Celtics in 2020, when he started 17 games and maintained averages of 8.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.
