Daniel Korski withdraws from London mayoral race following allegations of groping

Daniel Korski has withdrawn from the London Mayoral election contest following allegations of groping TV writer Daisy Goodwin at Downing Street. The 46-year-old, who denies the allegations, expressed his regret but acknowledged that the story had become a “distraction from the race and the Conservative Party”. Initially determined not to withdraw from the competition, Korski eventually succumbed to increasing pressure from his backers and some Tory MPs.

This leaves the Conservative Party with two remaining candidates for the 2024 race against incumbent Sadiq Khan.

A Change of Heart

In a statement, Korski stated: “I have decided, with a heavy heart, to withdraw from the Conservative mayoral contest.

“I categorically deny the allegation against me. Nothing was ever formally presented to me ten years ago. Nor seven years ago when the allegation was hinted at. No investigation has ever taken place. I have consistently expressed my willingness to participate in any investigation.

“However, the false and unproven allegation, coupled with the pressure it has put on my family, and the inability to effectively communicate my message of ‘The London Dream’, have made it impossible for my campaign to continue.

“I am proud of the positive campaign I have run, championing new ideas, technology, and talent, and the years I have devoted to campaigning for the Conservative Party and improving the lives of Londoners.

“I strongly believe that Londoners deserve an inspiring and optimistic vision for their city, and I have made every effort to provide that.

“The media focus has become a distraction from the contest and the Conservative Party.

“I wish the remaining excellent candidates well, and I am confident that the eventual Conservative candidate will defeat Sadiq Khan and bring about the much-needed renewal that London requires. I will do everything in my power to support the Conservative Party and the eventual candidate.

“I express my gratitude to my family, friends, and all my supporters.”

Earlier in the day, Downing Street refrained from commenting on whether the Prime Minister considered Korski a suitable candidate or if he should suspend his campaign. However, they emphasized the importance of following proper processes before drawing conclusions.

Sunak’s press secretary conveyed, “These allegations are very serious and have been firmly denied by Daniel Korski himself. They should be handled in an appropriate manner.”

When asked if the Prime Minister encourages individuals with complaints against former staff members to step forward, the press secretary responded, “Yes, of course.”

Calls for Reopening the Selection Process

Korski’s withdrawal from the mayoral race has sparked demands for the entire selection process to be restarted.

Samuel Kasumu, who was eliminated from the Tory selection process when the final three candidates were chosen, asserted that he deserves another opportunity in light of Korski’s decision to step down.

“Londoners rightfully expect the Conservatives to field the best possible candidate after a thorough and fair competition,” he expressed.

“The selection process should be reopened with greater involvement from members. There is still time to rectify this situation.”
