Dana Perino’s Thoughts Leading Up to the 2nd Republican Presidential Debate

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Get ready for an unforgettable evening as we broadcast live from the iconic Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. It’s time for the highly anticipated second Republican presidential primary debate, and it’s all happening TONIGHT, Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 9 pm ET.

I am honored to be one of your moderators for the evening, alongside the brilliant minds of FOX Business’ Stuart Varney and Univision’s Ilia Calderón.

As we spend time at the Reagan Library, memories of President Reagan’s inauguration during my first-grade year continue to resonate. His vision of a shining city on the hill and his commitment to peace through strength are powerful reminders of the legacy he left behind. This inspiring backdrop sets the tone for the dynamic event we will witness on Wednesday night.

‘CLOCK IS TICKING’: 2024 GOP CONTENDERS ADVISED TO LOOK FOR ‘BREAKOUT’ OPPORTUNITIES DURING SECOND DEBATE

As moderators, our focus will be on asking thought-provoking questions that capture the interests of the American people. However, it is up to the candidates to prove why they are the best choice for the job.

Let’s delve into some key topics that are on my mind as we prepare for the debate:

1. Breaking Records: Are You Better Off than You Were Four Years Ago?

During the 1980 campaign, Ronald Reagan posed a fundamental question: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

The American people responded with a resounding “no.” This led to Reagan’s victory, unseating Jimmy Carter. Four years later, Reagan asked that same question during his re-election campaign, and this time the answer was a resounding “yes.” He went on to win 49 states and secure another term as president.

BIG QUESTIONS FOR 2ND REPUBLICAN DEBATE CENTER AROUND 1 MAN, 1 WOMAN

Fast forward to today. President Biden has broken another record, one that cannot go unnoticed. Recent polls show that a staggering 44% of Americans believe they are NOT better off than they were four years ago, marking the worst result for any president in ABC/Post poll history. This aligns with our latest Fox News poll, which indicates that only 35% of American voters approve of Biden’s handling of the economy.

On Wednesday night, Republican candidates will present their vision for a brighter future, aiming to convince the American people that they can make a difference and improve the lives of every citizen.

2. The Rules of the Debate…

While I am someone who strictly follows the rules, presidential candidates on the debate stage often seek a breakout moment that can shape their candidacy.

FRAME THE DEBATE, WIN THE DEBATE: WHY WEDNESDAY’S REPUBLICAN DEBATE MATTERS

One crucial piece of advice I have shared with the candidates is the importance of avoiding talking over each other. If they fail to maintain a respectful and orderly debate, viewers at home won’t be able to hear their messages. Patience and strategic timing are key to making powerful statements. Let’s hope the candidates keep this in mind tonight!

3. Differentiating Questions for Interviews and Debates

It’s essential to understand the distinction between questions suited for interviews and questions suited for debates.

Interviews require questions that candidates can easily agree on or answer straightforwardly. On the other hand, debates aim to highlight the contrasting ideas and opinions of the candidates.

So, if you’re wondering why a specific topic wasn’t addressed during the debate, remember that candidates will have opportunities to discuss them on Fox News and address your pressing questions.

4. Involve the Next Generation

Campaign milestones are incredible opportunities to bring people together and involve them in the democratic process. I encourage parents to allow their children to stay up late and witness the debate. Afterwards, take the time to listen to their impressions and thoughts. Young people often offer fresh perspectives and wisdom. I would love to hear their reactions, so please share them with me.

5. Embrace Humility and Preparedness

As I prepare for Wednesday night’s debate, I am reminded of the valuable advice given by former White House press secretary Mike McCurry. He suggested that even when you are feeling confident and fully prepared, take a moment to step back and reevaluate. There may be something significant that you overlooked. That is precisely what I will be doing in the final moments leading up to the debate.
