An article published on 4 July falsely accused Rais Kayani of being a ‘fraudster’ who defrauded taxpayers out of £195,000 by submitting fake applications for Covid loans on behalf of businesses such as Greggs. It was claimed that Kayani personally benefited from this deception.

However, the prosecution has since accepted that Kayani did not make any such applications and did not impersonate Greggs or any other business. The Crown Prosecution Service, on which the article was based, confirmed that the identities of the individuals who made the applications are unknown.

Kayani also did not receive any money from the applications. It is clarified that his guilty plea was based on the fact that he did not personally profit from the funds. Kayani acknowledged that he failed to report his suspicions to the authorities, leading to his guilty plea. In a statement provided by his representative, Kayani stated that he had no knowledge or involvement in the applications made by others.
