Crystal Finn, from Succession, shares her harrowing encounter with otter attack during California river swim, necessitating hospital treatment: ‘The bites on my legs were clearly visible!’

Crystal Finn, known for her role in the hit series Succession, recently shared a harrowing experience she had while swimming in the Feather River in Northern California. Finn was attacked by otters, suffering bites on her backside and legs. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, she described the moment when she felt something on her backside and leg, and suddenly the otters appeared right in front of her, attacking her repeatedly. The bites were painful, and she received treatment at Tahoe Forest Hospital.

Finn speculated that the attack may have been motivated by a mother otter protecting her young. She was relieved that her young daughter wasn’t with her during the incident, as it would have been even more dangerous. She learned that there had been other otter attacks in the area, highlighting the importance of vigilance.

In another incident, a woman named Jen Royce survived an otter attack while tubing on the Jefferson River in Bozeman, Montana. The otter approached them without warning, viciously attacking Royce and her friends. The attack lasted for about five minutes before they managed to escape. Royce described the terrifying experience and the fear that they wouldn’t make it out alive.

These otter attacks, while rare, serve as a reminder of the potential danger posed by these animals. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks advises visitors to be cautious, especially when otters are with their young, as they can be protective. Biologists have recorded less than 60 incidents of otter attacks resulting in injuries or fatalities worldwide since 1875.

Jeff Ewelt, executive director of ZooMontana, explained that otters can be territorial and aggressive, particularly in situations where resources are scarce. He recommended fighting back if confronted by an otter, as they are unlikely to give up easily, especially if the encounter occurs in water.
