Cruise-Safari Ascendancy: An Emergence in Travel Experiences

Located just outside of Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park (now known as Gqeberha) offers a captivating wildlife experience. As I ventured through the park, I marveled at herds of zebra, grazing buffalo, skittish antelope, and even encountered a pair of warthogs with adorable two-week-old piglets.

However, the main attraction of the park is its population of around 650 elephants, which roam freely across its vast 630-square-mile area. We held our breath as a lone male elephant strolled within meters of our bus. This encounter was just the beginning, as we encountered many more elephants throughout the day. The highlight was witnessing approximately 100 elephants gathered at a waterhole, some even submerging themselves in the muddy waters, providing a mesmerizing sight.

During our time in Richards Bay, south of Durban, we embarked on a more authentic safari experience at the Thula Thula reserve. Riding in safari jeeps, we traversed rough and dusty tracks, hoping to spot the resident elephants. While our elephant search proved unsuccessful, we were compensated with a thrilling encounter with a temperamental rhino. The massive creature initially appeared as if it would charge towards our vehicle, creating tension and anticipation. Yet, to our relief, it swiftly changed direction and retreated back into the shade. This heart-stopping experience became the topic of discussion over cocktails later that evening, with the sun setting over the sea.

Truly, a cruise-safari hybrid is an unparalleled combination of relaxation and adventure. If you’re fortunate, you may even encounter some playful monkey business along the way.
