Criticism Rains on Meta for Imposing ‘Risky, Foolish’ Ban on Canadian News

Meta has implemented a ban on Canadians from sharing news content on Facebook and Instagram due to an ongoing dispute with the federal government. Experts argue that the timing couldn’t be worse, especially with wildfire evacuations currently taking place. The residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, have been instructed to evacuate by noon on Friday. However, with the nearest evacuation center nearly 700 miles away, residents are frustrated by their inability to share news stories about critical issues such as the safety of the highway system, as reported by the BBC. Many individuals have resorted to sharing screenshots of information instead of using links.

Meta’s decision to block news in Canada was made earlier this month in response to a law that mandates social media platforms to compensate news outlets when their content is shared. Ollie Williams, the editor of the Northwest Territories news site Cabin Radio, stated in an interview with the CBC that the ban is “stupid and dangerous and clearly should not be in place.” However, he also disagrees with the government’s approach to the issue. Williams mentioned that traffic to their website has significantly increased. Despite criticizing the ban, he commended the audience for bypassing Meta and going straight to the source for news updates, especially considering the current wildfire situation.
