Critical Update: Negotiations Disrupted between SAG-AFTRA and Studio Alliance

Negotiations between the SAG-AFTRA union and the major Hollywood studios have reached a deadlock. The union announced on Thursday that the latest offer from the studios was even worse than the previous one proposed before the strike began.

In separate statements, both SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers confirmed that negotiations were suspended on Wednesday.

Expressing disappointment, SAG-AFTRA stated on Thursday, “Despite negotiating with them in good faith, last week they presented an offer that was shockingly lower than their original proposal before the strike commenced.”

The two sides have held five meetings since October 2, marking their first talks since the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced on July 14. The most recent meeting took place on Wednesday.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers issued a statement saying, “Negotiations between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA were suspended after SAG-AFTRA presented their latest proposal on October 11. Following meaningful discussions, it became clear that the gap between the two parties is too wide, and continuing the conversations would not be fruitful.”

SAG-AFTRA’s demands include salary increases, protection against the use of actor images through artificial intelligence, better compensation for successful streaming programs, and improvements in health and retirement benefits.

The Writers Guild of America recently concluded their strike against the studios on September 27. The agreement was ratified by WGA members earlier this week, thus ending the strike that began on May 2.
