Creator Shares Story as Garfield Cat Toy Listening to Sad Songs Goes Viral

  • Videos featuring a melancholic Garfield toy listening to sad music have garnered millions of views.
  • Since its creation in late July, the account has gained over 138,000 followers.
  • The creator, known as L, shared insights with Insider on why people find the “weird-looking” toy so relatable.

A TikTok account dedicated to showcasing a sorrowful stuffed cat toy listening to melancholic music has quickly gained millions of views and a significant following. Viewers participate by requesting songs and finding solace in shared sorrow.

On July 31, the TikTok account @WonkyGarfield posted a video showcasing a droopy-eyed Garfield toy resting in a bathtub next to what seemed to be a wine bottle. The toy wore wired headphones and gazed into the distance while the song “Bug Like an Angel” by Mitski played in the background, featuring the lyrics, “Sometimes a drink feels like family.”

The video received 1.8 million views and over 2,500 comments, with many expressing a strong sense of identification with the toy’s emotions.

The account, created by L from Ireland, launched on July 30 and has posted only 26 times in a few weeks. Despite this, it has already amassed 138,000 followers and 4.5 million likes.

Each upload follows a similar pattern, featuring the tired-looking bear in various positions while wearing headphones. Sometimes the bear sits next to an open window as a candle flickers, or it can be seen in a moving car, all accompanied by downbeat music.

Viewers often suggest more sad songs to be featured in future videos and share their own personal anecdotes, such as conflicts with friends or family that have left them feeling down.

“God this account is the most relatable thing I’ve ever come in contact with thank you,” read a popular comment on a video of Garfield propped up by shelves while listening to Radiohead.

“He’s just like me,” wrote one viewer, receiving 3,700 likes, in response to another video of Garfield slumped on a bed.

L revealed that they started the series spontaneously one night while feeling bored and sitting next to their Garfield stuffed toy, which they had purchased from Amazon.

L posted a few videos in quick succession, and to their surprise, the videos quickly gained traction, receiving millions of views within days.

“I believe people find Garfield weird-looking but still cool with a music taste they can relate to,” L explained to Insider.

This isn’t the first time a lifeless toy has become an influencer for sad music. In May, a TikToker known as @snoopylistens began posting videos featuring a stuffed Snoopy wearing headphones, vibing out to sad songs. That account has gained over 250,000 followers and elicited a similar response from viewers.

It appears that sad toys may be the new influencer trend of the year.
