Arcangelo emerged as the winner of the Belmont Stakes, overcoming fierce competition to bring trainer Jena Antonucci her first Triple Crown race victory, and in doing so, become the first female trainer to claim such a title. Antonucci was overwhelmed with emotion as the horse crossed the finish line, and when Arcangelo later returned to the winner’s enclosure, she affectionately kissed the horse on the nose. The race was completed in 2:29.23, with Arcangelo coming home in front of Fotre by 1 1/2 lengths, and with Tapit Trice finishing third. The win was particularly significant given the deaths of horses at Churchill Downs around the time of this year’s Kentucky Derby and another on Preakness day for trainer Bob Baffert. Antonucci’s success was hard won, and saw her draw on her decades of experience working round horses as she built her stable. The victory was a clear indication that hard work, dedication, and perseverance can pay off when it counts the most. “Never give up,” said Antonucci. “And if you can’t find a seat at the table, make your own table and build your team and never give up. You’re seen. People see you. Just keep working your butt off.” Antonucci was the 11th woman to saddle a horse in the Belmont, and Kathy Ritvo’s seventh-place finish with Mucho Macho Man in 2011 was the previous best finish by a female trainer in the race’s history. Winning jockey Javier Castellano was quick to sing Antonucci’s praises after the race, saying “I’m really happy for her, you know, she’s a really good woman. She’s a good horseman.”
