Court Told: Kevin Spacey’s Reputation Damaged by False Sexual Assault Allegations

Kevin Spacey Fowler, the 63-year-old actor, stood trial for nine sexual offenses involving four men that allegedly took place between 2001 and 2013. During the closing speech at Southwark Crown Court in London, Spacey leaned forward, paying close attention to his defense barrister, Patrick Gibbs KC.

Gibbs addressed several topics including “fame, shame, money, and memory” and argued that three individuals had lied for reasons known only to themselves. He suggested that the fourth complainant may have been intoxicated. Gibbs challenged the prosecution’s claim of a “pattern of similarity” among the accusers, arguing that Spacey rejected the term “grabbed” when it was used to describe the alleged actions.

Gibbs emphasized that false allegations, even when convincing, do occur, especially in cases involving fame, money, sex, secrets, shame, and sexual confusion. He characterized Spacey as a man who is promiscuous yet not publicly out, creating an easy target for false accusations fueled by the power of social media.

Gibbs urged the jury to see beyond Spacey’s celebrity status and focus on the real person behind it. He dismissed the allegation that Spacey made a man almost lose control of his vehicle due to a painful crotch grab during a drive to a showbiz party at Sir Elton John’s Windsor home in the early 2000s as fiction. Gibbs argued that most of the man’s claims were vague and unverifiable, ultimately coming down to one person’s word against another’s.

Gibbs commended Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish for testifying as defense witnesses, despite the potential backlash from the internet. He praised their bravery in standing up for a man who had been universally condemned.

Spacey pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of indecent assault, sexual assault, and causing someone to engage in sexual activity without consent. Additional charges were added during the trial, but some were subsequently struck off due to a legal technicality. The jury was instructed to focus on the events themselves and their criminal nature without being overly concerned with specific dates.

The trial is ongoing.
