Court hears retired colonel accused of defrauding MoD was viewed as a ‘father figure’ by colleagues

In court, it was revealed that Marcus Reedman, a retired colonel and former deputy director of the Government’s Covid-19 taskforce, was seen as a “father figure” to his colleagues. However, he is currently facing allegations of defrauding the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to pay for his children’s expensive private boarding school fees. The fraud is said to involve tens of thousands of pounds, with Reedman allegedly receiving over £40,000 in false Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) claims. His two eldest children attended Brighton College, each costing around £30,000 per year, while his youngest daughter attended Marlborough House prep school. Reedman is accused of failing to disclose that he was living alone at his work address in Biggin Hill, Kent, while his wife resided at their family home in Rye, East Sussex. Supportive character witnesses testify that Reedman served as a source of guidance and assistance to junior colleagues during the challenging time of the Covid-19 pandemic. They describe him as honest, courageous, and willing to deliver difficult truths to the government. Reedman’s brother also speaks highly of him, highlighting his dedication to his family and his admirable qualities. Reedman has denied the fraud charges, asserting that he informed his chain of command about his living situation via email. The trial is ongoing in Southwark Crown Court.
