Couple Creates Gothic Nursery on TikTok for Their Twins

Content creator E.V. Rogina recently shared a TikTok video showcasing the gothic nursery she and her wife designed for their twins. In an interview with Insider, Rogina discussed their inspiration for the space and addressed critics who question their decision to create a dark aesthetic for their babies. The video has gained over 41 million views since its posting on Tuesday.

Rogina explained that they wanted to incorporate both gothic and modern elements into the nursery to reflect their individual decor preferences. While she favors gothic and Victorian design, her wife is more inclined towards minimal and modern styles. They aimed to merge these styles in every home project, including the nursery.

Color played a vital role in the planning process. Rogina found that gray is considered a calming color for babies, and she wanted to create a peaceful space where her children can retreat to amidst the overstimulation of the world. The couple’s home already features themed rooms, such as a forest-green office and a library-esque bathroom, so Rogina decided to continue the trend in the nursery.

Rogina discovered her pregnancy in October 2022 and began designing the nursery in January 2023. She continued working on it until she had to go on bed rest in April and gave birth. While the room is still a work in progress, it already contains symbols of their family and special touches that reflect their personalities.

The couple has adorned the nursery with ghost and bat decorations, as these are themes they already love throughout their home. They wanted to introduce their children to their interests and show them who their parents are and the world they’re entering.

One unique piece in the nursery is a mobile shaped like a swirl of bats, creating the illusion of them flying. After an extensive search for the perfect mobile, a friend gifted them with this ideal piece, saving Rogina from further efforts.

Although they have faced criticism for their unconventional nursery, Rogina remains unfazed. She emphasizes that as a lesbian couple, their children were planned, and they intentionally created this space for them. She ensures the room is not lacking color, with a corner dedicated to colorful toys and vibrant books. They also take their children to various places outside the house, such as museums and aquariums.

Rogina acknowledges that her gothic style may not be for everyone, including her children as they grow older. However, she believes that’s the beauty of it — the nursery currently represents their preferences and provides a calming environment, but she is open to supporting her children’s choices in the future. As a parent, her job is to listen and encourage their individuality.
