The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a nearly $2.6 million settlement with a fire department captain who was wounded in a tragic incident at the Agua Dulce station. The incident involved a fellow firefighter shooting and killing another colleague.
Capt. Arnoldo V. Sandoval filed a lawsuit against the county in January of last year, claiming assault, battery, and negligence in relation to the shooting that took place on June 1, 2021. Sandoval suffered serious injuries, including paralysis, as a result of the incident.
In addition to the county, the lawsuit also named Jonathan Patrick Tatone’s estate. Tatone was the gunman who opened fire at Station 81, resulting in the death of Firefighter Engineer Tory Carlon and the injury of Sandoval. According to the lawsuit, Tatone, who was off-duty at the time, engaged in an argument before carrying out the shooting. Afterward, Tatone returned to his Acton home, set it on fire, and took his own life.
In the lawsuit, Sandoval alleged that Tatone had exhibited threatening, bullying, combative, angry, and unstable behavior for years before the incident, which was known to his supervisors.
During its regular Tuesday meeting, the county Board of Supervisors approved the recommended settlement of $2.575 million with Sandoval. County Counsel Dawyn R. Harrison wrote in a letter to the board that the case was an employment-related lawsuit brought by a fire department employee who was shot and seriously injured in the Fire Station 81 incident.
“This proposed settlement is recommended due to the risks and uncertainties of litigation, and resolution at this time would avoid further litigation costs,” Harrison explained.
