Council staff’s home working results in disabled drivers lacking blue badges

East Sussex County Council has refuted claims that remote working is causing delays in the processing of blue badges, stating in a recent statement that it is “not a contributing factor”.

However, a letter obtained by The Telegraph reveals that the council informed Mr. Kuhrt that it will likely take a considerable amount of time before his documents can be processed due to the fact that they are working remotely and only collecting their post once a week.

The council also attributed delays to the “extremely high volume of post”.

Expressing concern, Mr. Kuhrt now anticipates longer waiting times to obtain a blue badge for his wife, whom he regularly drives to hospital appointments. Without the badge, they are unable to use disabled bays, forcing his wife to navigate long distances.

The council’s website advertises various staff benefits, including remote working, unpaid career breaks, and job-sharing to promote a healthy work-life balance.

Meanwhile, other councils are cautioning blue badge applicants that it could take several months for their permits to be issued.

Sheffield City Council, for example, informs applicants that they may need to wait up to 12 weeks due to staffing issues. On average, the council has been processing applications within 28 days over the past three months.

Tower Hamlets Council also alerts potential applicants on its website that successful individuals should expect a waiting period of 12 weeks due to the high number of submissions.

Andy Martin, an independent member of Liberal Democrat-led Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, acknowledges the long wait times and states that the council is striving to reduce them to eight weeks.
