Council on Foreign Relations Investigates the Murder of Yevgeny Prigozhin

Carolyn Kissane, the academic director and clinical professor at the Center for Global Affairs at New York University, will be leading the discussion on the geopolitics of oil in the final session of the Winter/Spring 2023 CFR Academic Webinar Series. This session is on the record, and the video and transcript will be available on CFR.org/Academic for sharing with colleagues and classmates. CFR maintains no institutional positions on policy matters. Dr. Kissane is well-versed in the field, holding positions as the academic director of the graduate program in global affairs and the graduate program in global security conflict and cybercrime at NYU. Additionally, she serves as the director of the energy, climate justice, and sustainability lab in the School of Professional Studies at NYU. Dr. Kissane’s expertise has also earned her recognition, being named one of the top ten New York women in energy and a top ten energy communicator by Breaking Energy in 2013. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and sits on multiple boards.

The conversation with Dr. Kissane will focus on the changing geopolitics of oil, with a specific look at the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine and OPEC’s recent decision to cut oil production. These events have reshaped the oil geopolitics landscape, prompting countries to reconsider their approach to oil security in the context of broader energy security and the urgent need for decarbonization. As global demand for oil continues to rise, especially in Asia, the implications of these geopolitical shifts in oil production and pricing are significant. The recent decision by OPEC to reduce production has already led to an increase in oil prices, raising concerns about its impact on economies and the potential for energy inflation. Visuals will be shared during the discussion to illustrate the interconnectedness of the global energy system, the distribution of oil producers and importers, and recent developments in the oil market.

Overall, this webinar promises to provide valuable insights into the complex and rapidly evolving geopolitics of oil, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities faced by nations as they navigate this critical aspect of energy security.
