Cosplayers and Ghostbusters take center stage at Fandom Fest in Proctors, Schenectady

The annual Fandom Fest at the theater is a celebration of all things pop culture. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The festival features celebrity guest panels, video and tabletop games, and cosplay contests. Cosplay, a combination of costume and play, involves dressing up and sometimes performing as a character from media.

Proctors was filled with cosplayers of all ages and skill levels. Eric Steinborn’s daughter Olivia attended dressed as Nezuko Kamado from the television series “Demon Slayer.” Julisa Gomez’s family drew inspiration from various series and games, including Dragon Ball, The Proud Family, and Apex Legends.

Amanda Sammons, a 32-year-old from Troy, showcased her talent in the cosplay contest as Gaige from the video game “Borderlands 2.” She meticulously crafted a wig and goggles from foam to mimic the game’s cel-shaded animation. Hannah Laurence, a 31-year-old from Albany, transformed herself into Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People from a fictional black-and-white film in the “Star Trek: Voyager” series. She used gray body paint, a silver beaded dress, and a spider-themed wig. Laurence stated that she enjoys challenging herself in cosplay.

Visitors entered the Geek Garage through a replica of the TARDIS from “Doctor Who” and were greeted by a car show featuring replica vehicles. K.I.T.T. from “Knight Rider” was parked next to the station wagon from “National Lampoon’s Vacation.”

Mariah Carter, a 19-year-old from Albany, represented her family’s business, Motor Oil Coffee, as a vendor in the Vendor Hall. The area offered food, drink, and merchandise.

During their breaks, attendees had the chance to meet Todd Haberkorn, a renowned voice actor known for his work in series like “Soul Eater,” and Dave Barclay, a puppeteer who worked on creatures in films such as “Return of the Jedi” and “Labyrinth.”

The Hudson Valley Ghostbusters had a booth at the event, showcasing their ghost-fighting gear, slime kits, and a green screen for photo opportunities. The nonprofit raised funds for the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Tara Sobel, co-founder of the Hudson Valley Ghostbusters, mentioned that they had been busy attending to visitors and showcasing their Ghost Vacuum.

Overall, the Fandom Fest provided a unique and exciting experience for enthusiasts of pop culture, bringing together diverse elements of media and entertainment in a fun-filled celebration.
