The opening weekend of the Copa Paulino Alcantara at Rizal Memorial Stadium saw Tuloy FC secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Philippine Army in their first-ever top-flight match.
In Group C, Tuloy FC, a team comprised of young footballers from Tuloy sa Don Bosco School in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, pulled off an upset against the experienced Armed Forces side, with James Demate scoring the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute.
John Sajor scored twice for Tuloy FC, one of the 12 non-PFL (Philippines Football League) clubs participating in this year’s annual cup competition, which has opened its doors to non-amateur teams.
Speaking in Filipino, Sajor said, “We proved that we can compete against high-level teams even if we’re only a group of street children.”
In Group A, Philippine Air Force marked their Copa return with a 1-0 win over Don Bosco Garelli, thanks to an early second-half goal from Dari Poderoso.
Davao Aguilas, the runners-up in the inaugural tournament in 2018, also made a successful comeback to the competition with a 2-0 victory over Adamson University in Group C. Serge Kaole and Rendon Cielo scored the second-half goals for Davao Aguilas.
Meanwhile, Club de Futbol Manila denied Loyola FC, another returning team, by securing a 2-0 victory in Group A with goals from Mikio Umilin and Benjie Panotes.
