Aug. 2 (UPI) — Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp sustained a hamstring injury during practice, leading to potential missed playing time, according to an announcement from the team.

The Rams revealed that Kupp injured his hamstring during training camp in Irvine, Calif., on Tuesday. However, they have not provided a specific timeline for his return. A source informed ESPN that Kupp could potentially return for scrimmages in a few weeks.

The Rams will resume training camp on Thursday at the University of California, Irvine.

Rams coach Sean McVay commented on Kupp’s injury, stating, “It seemed like he came up a bit injured during a red zone route, and they told me he was out for practice.”

Kupp, who is 30 years old, recorded 812 yards and six touchdowns on 75 catches in nine games last season. He missed the final eight games of the season due to a high-ankle sprain.

In the 2021 season, Kupp led the NFL with 145 receptions for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns in 17 starts. He received All-Pro, Pro Bowl, and Offensive Player of the Year honors, finishing third in the MVP voting. Kupp’s reception total that season was just four shy of Michael Thomas’ all-time record from 2019.

Selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Kupp signed a three-year, $80.1 million contract with the Rams in 2022.

Additionally, the Rams roster includes wide receivers Ben Skowronek, Van Jefferson, Demarcus Robinson, Puka Nacua, Tutu Atwell, Lance McCutcheon, Tyler Johnson, Austin Trammell, Tyler Hudson, Braxton Burmeister, and Xavier Smith.

McVay emphasized the need to move forward in light of Kupp’s injury, stating, “You gotta be able to move on. I hope he’s okay, but we gotta be able to go practice. Guys gotta step up. Obviously, we are much better when he’s here.”

He added, “You hope he’s gonna be okay, but if he’s not, we’ll see what happens. The practice had to go on.”

Prior to their preseason game on August 19, the Rams will hold joint practices with the Las Vegas Raiders. They will also practice with the Denver Broncos before their preseason meeting on August 26.

The Rams will kick off their regular season on September 10 in Seattle against the Seattle Seahawks.
