Controversy Surrounds Runner who Claims ‘Slowest-Ever’ 100m Record

Somalia faced embarrassment at the FISU 2023 World University Games as their sprinter, Nasra Ali Abukar, delivered a disappointing performance in the women’s 100-meter race. Crossing the finish line at 21.81 seconds, almost 10 seconds behind the heat’s winner, Abukar’s slow race has become a viral sensation, earning the title of the “slowest-ever” in a global competition. News reports reveal that the Somali Athletics Federation plans to launch an investigation into the matter.

Mohamed Barre, the Somali Minister for Sport, expressed his intention to hold accountable those responsible for the misrepresentation and embarrassment caused to the country. This incident has led to criticism from various individuals, including Elham Garaad, a Somali commentator who shared the video on Twitter. Garaad strongly criticized the government’s decision to select an untrained individual to represent Somalia in running, calling it an incompetent move that reflects poorly on the country internationally.

Garaad further accused the government of corruption, claiming that Abukar is the niece of Khadija Aden Dahir, the senior vice president of the Somali Athletics Federation. This allegation was supported by a post from Dahir’s Facebook account congratulating her niece on July 25. The situation has sparked conversations about corruption and nepotism within the athletic community.

Notably, Abukar does not have a presence on the World Athletics database or the World University Games site. While her time of 21.81 seconds may be acceptable for an average adult, it falls significantly below the usual standard expected at the World University Games. To put it into perspective, the U.S. women’s Olympic 100-meter team has an 11.5-second qualifying standard. Abukar’s time is also six seconds slower than the slowest recorded time of 15.26 seconds in the women’s 100-meter event at the 2020 Olympics.
