Controversial Incident Unveiled: Congressman Causes Alarm Amid Capitol Hill Chaos

In an astonishing turn of events on Saturday in Washington, a Democratic congressman accidentally pulled a fire alarm in the Capitol office building. Jamaal Bowman of New York claims it was unintentional, but he now faces an ethics investigation, potential expulsion from the House, and even potential criminal charges, according to Punchbowl News. The alarm was pulled while Democrats were attempting to delay a vote on a bill proposed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, giving them time to review it and determine whether to support it, as reported by the New York Times. Ultimately, they ended up supporting the bill. The Cannon House Office Building was evacuated amidst blaring alarms.

In a statement, Bowman clarified that he was rushing to the Capitol to cast his vote and did not intentionally pull the alarm to hinder proceedings.

  • “I am embarrassed to admit that I activated the fire alarm, mistakenly thinking it would open the door. I regret this and sincerely apologize for any confusion this caused,” he said, as mentioned in an article by NBC News. “But I want to be very clear: this was not me, in any way, trying to delay any vote. It was the exact opposite—I was trying urgently to get to a vote.”

Republicans, however, wasted no time in taking action against him. Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis, also from New York, announced her intention to introduce a motion to expel Bowman from the House. “This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school,” she tweeted. “This action warrants expulsion & I’m introducing a resolution to do just that,” she wrote. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed his desire for the House Ethics Committee to conduct an investigation, drawing comparisons between Bowman and the rioters of January 6th. “When you think about how other people were treated when they come in and wanted to change the course of what was happening in the building,” he remarked. Democratic Leader Representative Hakeem Jeffries, also from New York, stated that he would not comment until he had watched the video of the fire alarm incident. (Read more Jamaal Bowman stories.)
