A settlement “in principle” has been reached in the lawsuit filed by Jeremy Hartwell, a former contestant on season two of the reality series “Love Is Blind.” Hartwell alleged that the show’s companies, Netflix Inc., Kinetic Content LLC, and Delirium TV LLC, created “unsafe and inhumane” conditions. The settlement amount has not been disclosed, but negotiations are ongoing for additional terms.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff has scheduled a status conference for Wednesday.
“Love is Blind” premiered on Netflix in February 2020, featuring single men and women who become engaged before meeting. Hartwell claimed that contestants were provided with excessive amounts of alcohol and inadequate food and water, resulting in inevitable intoxication. He also argued that the cast members were underpaid and lacked sufficient rest periods between filming sessions.
The proposed class-action lawsuit, filed in June 2022, stated that the defendants “created and maintained unsafe and inhumane working conditions for the cast of the shows.”
The lawsuit also alleged that the companies failed to compensate employees for all hours worked, including minimum wage and overtime hours. Hartwell claimed that he and other cast members worked up to 20 hours a day, seven days a week, for a weekly payment of $1,000, equivalent to as little as $7.14 per hour.
In response, Netflix’s attorneys stated in court papers that Hartwell was upset about not being chosen by any other participant for an engagement and argued that his wage and hour violation claims were baseless. They also emphasized that Netflix was not involved in the day-to-day production of the show.
The lawyers representing Kinetic Content and Delirium TV also defended their clients, stating that Hartwell was a participant, not an employee, and was involved in the show for only six days. They asserted that the companies were not at fault.
