Continuing Counteroffensive: Ukraine Declares Recapture of Fourth Village

Ukrainian military officials announced on Monday that their troops have successfully regained control of another village in southeastern Ukraine from Russian forces. This marks one of the first small-scale accomplishments in the intensified counteroffensive operations against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has lasted over 15 months.

Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar expressed her satisfaction on Telegram, stating that the Ukrainian flag is once again flying over the village of Storozhov. She further predicted that the liberation of “all Ukrainian land” will ultimately be achieved. Ukrainian officials had previously reported the liberation of three other neighboring villages south of Velika Novosilke in the eastern Donetsk region.

These villages are situated in the “Vremivka ledge,” a section of the front line where the Russian-controlled area extends into Ukrainian territory. The area has become a significant hub of intense fighting.

Although the Russian Defense Ministry has not confirmed the retreat of their forces from these villages, some military bloggers have acknowledged the loss of Russian control. On the other hand, Russian authorities have asserted that their troops have largely held their positions along the extensive 1,000-kilometer front line across southern and eastern Ukraine.

While Western analysts and military officials caution that ridding Ukraine of entrenched, powerfully armed, and skilled Russian troops will likely take months, the success of any Ukrainian counteroffensive remains uncertain.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned on Saturday that “counteroffensive, defensive actions are taking place.” However, he did not specify whether it was a full-fledged counteroffensive. This statement came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the counteroffensive had begun and that Ukrainian forces were suffering significant losses. Ukrainian authorities have not disclosed any public information regarding casualties among their troops.

In the midst of these developments, authorities on both sides of the active front line along the Dnieper River in the southern Kherson region are diligently working on rescuing and relocating civilians who have been displaced by the recent flooding caused by the breach of the Kakhovka dam. Access to fresh drinking water is a pressing need, and the potential spread of water-borne diseases is a significant concern, according to the U.N. and other aid groups.

Tragically, three people lost their lives when Russian troops opened fire on a boat evacuating individuals from Russian-occupied areas. Late on Sunday, Zelenskyy revealed that officials from the International Criminal Court have visited the region to investigate the disaster, which has resulted in the displacement of thousands and at least 14 deaths. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of international representatives witnessing the consequences of Russia’s act of terrorism firsthand and hearing that the Russian terror continues.

Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces, who controlled the area around the dam, of deliberately destroying it, while Russian officials have attributed the destruction to Ukrainian shelling.
