Continuing Concerns on Air Quality in Quebec Despite Slowing Wildfires and Residents’ Return

Air quality concerns persist in various regions of Quebec as residents begin to return home following evacuations triggered by wildfires. SOPFEU, Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, reported that progress in containing the wildfires has been slow, with 121 active fires and 32 priority blazes being fought by firefighters.

Despite efforts to control the fires, Environment Canada has issued a smog advisory for the Abitibi-Temiscamingue, Gatineau, and Mont-Laurier regions. The advisory recommends that individuals with asthma or respiratory and heart conditions refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activities outdoors.

The mayor of Lebel-sur-Quevillon, located in northwestern Quebec, announced that the town’s 2,000 residents, who were evacuated two weeks ago, will be allowed to return to their homes on Sunday. Essential workers have already returned to prepare for the homecoming, while the nearby wildfire continues to be a concern for authorities. American and Portuguese firefighters have been brought in to assist in battling the blaze.

Mayor Guy Lafreniere expressed confidence in the readiness of local businesses, including gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, and pharmacies, to serve the returning residents.

In Abitibi-Temiscamingue, the provincial government has permitted the return of Senneterre’s 3,000 residents and Normetal’s 750 residents. However, walking in the forest is still banned in certain parts of Abitibi-Temiscamingue, the North Shore, Mauricie, Northern Quebec, and Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean.

The situation remains dynamic, and authorities are continuously monitoring and responding to the changing circumstances.
