Continued Disruptions for Irish Passengers as Airport Troubles Escalate due to Technical Problems with UK Air Traffic Control

Thousands of travellers all over Europe are facing chaos as a glitch in air traffic control causes major disruptions. The issue with UK air traffic control has resulted in over 150 flights to and from Irish airports being delayed or cancelled. While the technical issues have been resolved, delays and cancellations will continue. Today, 20 flights at Dublin Airport have been cancelled, affecting routes to Liverpool, Naples, Verona, Riga, Cagliari, London Heathrow, and London City. At Cork Airport, flights to Amsterdam, Zurich, Edinburgh, Manchester have been cancelled. UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper stated that it would take days to resolve the widespread flight disruptions, but assured that there was no cyber breach involved. Aer Lingus is advising passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. They acknowledge that despite the resolution of the UK National Air-Traffic Service flight planning system, there may still be inevitable cancellations and delays. Meanwhile, Dublin Airport has announced that passengers affected by delays will not incur additional parking charges. Cork Airport has also advised travellers to confirm with their airline before arriving at the airport. Heathrow Airport advised passengers to contact their airline before travelling on Tuesday. Airlines are doing their best to adjust schedules and accommodate as many people as possible, but some planes and crews are not in the right places. This has left tens of thousands of holidaymakers stranded all over Europe. The disruptions have affected not just vacationers, but also athletes returning from the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Among those affected were Irish athletes Kelly McGrory, Sophie Becker, John Fitzsimons, and Mark English, as well as Athletics Ireland staff, fans, and media. Passengers are frustrated with the lack of information provided by airlines, with many feeling helpless and uncertain about when they can return home. The situation has caused significant inconvenience to travellers and is beyond the airlines’ control.
