Continuation of Jury Deliberations in Bill Cosby’s Sex Abuse Civil Suit, Exactly One Year Ago Today (June 18, 2022)

Today marks the one-year anniversary (June 18, 2022) of the trial in which a lawsuit was filed by a woman from Riverside County, claiming that comedian Bill Cosby sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in the 1970s when she was a teenager.

On Friday, the jury notified the court that they had reached partial verdicts on some of the questions they were deliberating. Unfortunately, time constraints prevented the judge from reading these partial verdicts, and the courthouse had to close for the day.

Due to one of the jurors going on vacation next week, an alternate juror will join the panel on Monday, and the deliberations will restart.

Throughout the two-week trial, attorneys representing Judy Huth, now 64 years old, have accused the 84-year-old Cosby, who is legally blind, of assaulting her in a game room at the mansion in 1975, when she was only 16. Huth and her then-17-year-old friend, Donna Samuelson, were allegedly brought to the mansion by Cosby after meeting him while he was filming “Let’s Do It Again” with Jimmie Walker and Sidney Poitier.

Cosby’s defense team has vehemently denied the allegations and has attempted to undermine Huth’s account of the events. They pointed out that Huth and Samuelson continued to stay at the Playboy Mansion for up to 12 hours after the alleged assault. Additionally, they argued that Huth initially claimed the attack occurred in 1974 when she was 15, but later changed her story to say it happened a year later.

Eventually, Huth reported her allegations to the Los Angeles Police Department, but no criminal charges were filed due to the statute of limitations. However, she was able to file a civil suit under a California law that allows adults who were victims of sexual abuse as minors, and repressed the memories for years, to pursue legal action.

In a separate trial in Pennsylvania, Cosby was previously convicted of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand, an employee of Temple University. However, his conviction was overturned by the state’s Supreme Court in June of last year based on a nonprosecution agreement from a previous prosecutor. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the state Supreme Court’s decision.

During the trial, Huth claimed that she, Samuelson, and Cosby were in a game room at the Playboy Mansion that had an adjoining bedroom. Samuelson even took a photo of Huth and Cosby together in the room, which was shown to the jury multiple times. Huth alleged that Cosby kissed her, attempted to touch her inappropriately, and forced her to engage in a sexual act.

Huth’s attorney, Nathan Goldberg, stated that she repressed the memories of the assault until other women began speaking out against Cosby in 2014. She filed her lawsuit in December of that year.

Cosby’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, questioned the credibility of the allegations, suggesting that Huth’s emotional trauma may have stemmed from other events in her life. Bonjean also highlighted the change in the date of the alleged attack as evidence of potential fabrication.

During the trial, the jury watched a videotaped deposition of Cosby from 2015, in which he denied assaulting Huth, claimed not to remember meeting her, and denied engaging in any sexual activity with an underage girl.

In response to the defense argument that Huth and Samuelson stayed at the mansion after the alleged assault, Goldberg argued that Huth wanted to leave but was convinced by Samuelson to stay and go swimming to feel better. Samuelson testified that Huth was upset and crying but didn’t want to involve the police.

Huth is seeking unspecified damages in the lawsuit.
