Contempt Vote Targeting Zuckerberg Put on Hold by House Republicans

The House Judiciary Chairman, Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), has temporarily suspended the panel’s vote on holding Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress. This decision comes after Facebook provided additional documents to the committee.

In a tweet, Jordan stated, “Based on Facebook’s newfound commitment to fully cooperate with the Committee’s investigation, the Committee has decided to hold contempt in abeyance. For now. To be clear, contempt is still on the table and WILL be used if Facebook fails to cooperate in FULL”

The committee had scheduled a vote to hold the CEO of Facebook and Instagram’s parent company in contempt. The accusation was that the company did not cooperate with the panel’s investigation into how tech companies interact with the government and make decisions about content moderation.

Meta strongly denied these allegations, stating that it had provided more than 53,000 documents to the committee.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed that the company had sent additional documents to the committee.

In addition to announcing the postponement of the vote, Jordan shared excerpts from the internal documents received by the panel. He increased his claims that Meta censors content with an anti-conservative bias and does so under pressure from the Biden administration.

Democrats have criticized Republicans for their attacks on social media companies’ content moderation practices, emphasizing that these private companies are protected by the First Amendment and have the right to moderate content according to their own policies.

Despite this, Jordan continued his assault and stated that the documents received “PROVE” that social media companies “censored posts and changed their content moderation policies because of unconstitutional pressure from the Biden White House.”

Regarding these additional allegations made by Jordan, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone declined to comment.

The snippets of internal documents released by Jordan predominantly focus on content moderation regarding COVID-19 and vaccines.

However, the pressure from the Biden administration mentioned by Jordan was also publicly shared.

In July 2021, President Biden accused social media companies that allow the spread of COVID-19 misinformation of “killing people.” He later retracted this statement, clarifying that it is not Facebook itself killing people, but rather the individuals who spread misinformation on the platform.
