Consumers Affected: I’ve been paying to lease an electric car that has been inactive for months

In March, I experienced a minor accident with my leased all-electric Jaguar I-Pace, which I acquired through a salary sacrifice deal with Tusker. The company’s scheme includes insurance coverage for the vehicle.

Unfortunately, following the crash which was entirely my fault, the car was taken away and it has been five months since I have yet to receive it back. In the meantime, I have been provided with a petrol-powered Ford Fiesta, which not only requires me to pay for refueling but also the leasing payments for the Jaguar.

Initially, I expected the car to be out of commission for only a short period, but the situation has been dragging on with no clear indication of when I can expect its return. The fact that I must communicate through Tusker rather than having a direct relationship with the insurer has further complicated matters.

I find myself wondering how many other electric and non-electric cars are currently off the road due to parts unavailability. It is likely that the number is surprisingly high. As my colleague Anna Tims has previously highlighted, motorists often face significant delays in getting their cars back on the road after minor accidents due to a global shortage of parts. This problem seems to be worsening instead of improving, especially when it comes to electric vehicles, which dealers often struggle to repair.

Upon contacting Tusker on your behalf, I am pleased to report that your experience quickly improved. You were provided with a much better courtesy car, and this week your repaired Jaguar was finally returned to you.

Tusker explained that the availability of the required parts was beyond their control but expressed satisfaction in resolving your case.

I can only imagine the relief you must feel in no longer having to pay for petrol expenses, something that many owners of petrol or diesel cars can sympathize with.
