A man, aged 38, has pleaded guilty to the murder of his long-term girlfriend and mother of their two children.
Richard Lara has been sentenced to 26 years to life in state prison after his plea of first-degree murder on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Lara admitted to using a knife during the crime, which took place on February 4.
According to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department, Lara and his girlfriend, Nicole Santillanes, left their apartment on South Broadway in the evening to visit a nearby store. When they returned, a dispute between them escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in the woman’s murder.
The couple had been together for 13 years and were living with their two children.
Lara fled the scene and was apprehended on February 8 by the LAPD’s Gang and Narcotics Division.
Santillanes, a mother of four children aged 7, 8, 13, and 20 at the time, worked as a nursing assistant to support her children, according to a GoFundMe page. The page has raised over $14,400, with donors describing Santillanes as a beautiful woman who went above and beyond for her children.
