Compelling News: Man Arrested for Jewett City Bank Robbery Spent Loot on Rent, Drugs, and Heartfelt Memorial Flowers

Nov. 4—According to a state police report, a 39-year-old man from Plainfield has been charged with the July robbery of a Jewett City bank and a second bank robbery in August. The suspect, identified as Robert Doyle, has confessed to using the stolen money on rent, drugs, and flowers for his daughter’s grave. Doyle, who resides in the Moosup section of town, specifically at 203 Prospect St., is facing charges of second-degree robbery, disorderly conduct, and fourth-degree larceny for the July 14 robbery of Eastern Connecticut Savings Bank located at 1 Slater Ave.

In the August robbery of a Mansfield bank, Doyle is facing charges of second-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, and second-degree breach of peace.

In the Jewett City bank robbery, eyewitnesses reported seeing a man matching Doyle’s description acting strangely in the area, shortly before fleeing with approximately $1,240 in cash. Surveillance videos from both banks identified Doyle as the suspect responsible for the robberies.

After tracking Doyle’s location through cellphone data, police apprehended him in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on August 16. He was arrested by Michigan state police and later extradited to Connecticut. During an interview with state police detectives, Doyle confessed to the Jewett City robbery and described the note he passed to the teller. The note read: “Everyone’s life is in your hands; no dye packs or tracking devices; give me what you can; my life is upside down.”

Doyle admitted to using the stolen money to pay his rent, as well as buying drugs and a large flower bouquet for his daughter’s grave. He also confessed to robbing the Mansfield bank after running out of money.

Doyle was previously charged on August 31 with second-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, and second-degree breach of peace. The case is currently being heard in Rockville Superior Court. In the Jewett City case, Doyle is being held on a $300,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on November 16.
