Comparing Notes: US and China Discuss Differences in Productive and Open Dialogue

In a meeting between the top diplomats of the US and China on Sunday in Beijing, both sides brought their own lists of disagreements and grievances. However, it seems that neither side has been willing to let go of any of them. Chinese state media reported that Foreign Minister Qin Gang emphasized to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that “the Taiwan issue” remains the most important issue in Sino-U.S. relations and the greatest risk. The Foreign Ministry further conveyed China’s “clear demands” regarding Taiwan. Meanwhile, the State Department highlighted Blinken’s focus on maintaining open lines of communication to minimize any misperception or miscalculation.

Both governments used similar wording to describe the 5½ hours of talks between Blinken and Qin, describing them as “candid, in depth and constructive.” However, a State Department official acknowledged that there were profound differences evident during the meeting. The United States summary emphasized their commitment to standing up for American interests and values and working with allies and partners to advance their vision for a free, open, and rules-based world.

The main agreement reached between the two diplomats was that Qin would visit Washington to continue discussions, although no specific date was announced. They also discussed ways to facilitate easier travel for both nations’ citizens, including opening doors to more students and businesspeople and increasing the number of flights between China and the US.
