Avoid the Mistake of Eating Inauthentic Gelato

As someone who grew up in Italy, I can tell you that not all gelaterias in Rome serve authentic gelato. There are specific ways to identify the real deal.

According to The Local Italy, authentic gelato is churned at a slow speed, resulting in a creamy and dense texture with less air mixed in. It should have muted, natural-looking colors if made with natural ingredients, free from artificial additives or food coloring.

I’ve learned to avoid gelaterias that have neon-blue gelato or exaggerated ice-cream cone sculptures. These are usually tourist traps, lacking the quality of a genuine gelato shop. I suggest not falling for gelato that looks unnaturally vibrant or piled up into fluffy mounds.

When it comes to authentic gelato, my go-to places in the city are Fatamorgana, Torcè, Gelateria La Romana, and Giolitti. Gelateria La Romana and Giolitti also offer coffee and pastry options, perfect for a traditional Italian post-dinner espresso.
