Commentary: Liberals’ Lack of Response to Censorship, Democrats Push for Gerrymander Redo and More

This Left’s Silence on Censorship

The recent revelations about the federal government’s involvement in censoring speech has led Matt Taibbi of Racket News to question the absence of the liberals who used to oppose such restrictions. He asks, “Where are the liberals from the seventies, eighties, and nineties who always fought against limiting speech?” For instance, when Tipper Gore wanted voluntary warnings on record labels in 1985 or when the FBI complained about NWA’s song “F- -k the Police.” It seems that the selection of what to censor is now being outsourced to foreign governments like Ukraine’s Security Agency, and the liberals are nowhere to be found.

New York Democrats Seek a Gerrymander ‘Do-Over’

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board criticizes the New York Democrats’ desire for a gerrymander “do-over” after the state judiciary declared their previous redistricting map a partisan gerrymander. They now want to create new districts that will make it easier for them to regain control of the House next year. However, this goes against an amendment in the state Constitution that prohibits the favoring of political parties in district drawing. Despite this, the Democratic-controlled Legislature chose to ignore it. The Republicans will appeal to the state’s top court, but given its recent progressive appointee, the outcome may not be favorable to them.

Tests Aren’t the Problem in Education

Howard Husock at City Journal predicts that colleges will find alternative ways to pursue diversity after the Supreme Court ruled against racial preferences in higher education. One likely workaround in New York is getting rid of entrance-exam requirements for admission to elite public schools. However, low representation of black and Hispanic students in these schools reflects the failures of the public school system rather than the merit-based admissions policies. Elite private high schools in New York have far higher percentages of black students, indicating that there are qualified minority students who attend other schools. The problem lies with the public schools themselves, not the entrance exams.

John Kerry on the Grill

In a humorous take, Howie Carr of the Boston Herald suggests that the world dodged a bullet when John Forbes Kerry didn’t become president in 2004. During his climate-czar congressional testimony, Kerry was questioned about his use of private jets. He claimed that the planes belonged to his wife’s family and his dad, not him, which could be seen as perjury. However, the bigger news is his upcoming trip to China to battle the climate crisis. Carr amusingly describes it as a vacation, junket, or fact-finding mission, and highlights Kerry’s intention to berate any Republican who tries to approach him. It seems Kerry would rather be on one of his private islands than engaging with Republicans.

Democrats’ Disdain for the Majority

According to Hugo Gurdon of the Washington Examiner, Democrats are willing to leave anyone and everyone behind in their pursuit of power. They show disdain for the constitutional judgment of the Supreme Court and the moral compass of the majority. While they focus on the concerns of tiny niche groups, they ignore the sensible majority and view ordinary people as unintelligent or selfish. They have no qualms about leaving children in schools that perpetuate ignorance. Gurdon suggests that a more accurate bumper sticker for Democrats would be “Leave no one behind except most Americans – vote Democrat.”
