Coming soon: Nationwide emergency alert to alarm all device users

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have announced a nationwide test of their Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at 2:20 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Oct. 4. There’s no need to panic. The WEA test will be sent to consumer cell phones, while the EAS portion will be broadcasted on radios and televisions. These tests are standard practice and have been done before. The WEA message will be received within 30 minutes and will display on cell phones with the following text: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” The WEA test will send an emergency alert to all consumer cell phones between 2:20 and 2:50 p.m. The EAS test will last for 1 minute, with broadcasters and providers announcing: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by FEMA, covering the United States from 2:20 to 2:50 p.m. ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.” The test message will be displayed in either English or Spanish, based on the device owner’s language preference. However, if severe weather or another significant event occurs, the tests will be postponed to Oct. 11. These tests are being conducted to ensure the effectiveness of the national emergency alert systems in case of a real emergency. With extreme weather events occurring more frequently worldwide, including in states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Nevada, California, and Washington, it is crucial to be prepared.
