Columnist from Our Sports of the Times Argues in Favor of Haiti

The Women’s World Cup is currently underway, with the spotlight shining on renowned teams such as France, Brazil, and Germany. Of course, attention is also directed towards the two-time defending champion, the United States. These teams are talented and well-funded by both their national soccer federations and corporate giants, and they deserve recognition for their achievements.

However, my admiration lies with the underdog of this tournament, Haiti, affectionately known as Les Grenadiers or The Soldiers. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have shown remarkable resilience and determination. Haiti is a nation that has struggled to recover from the scars of colonialism and slavery, experiencing poverty and devastation as a result. The burden of debt imposed by France has made Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, the country has faced natural disasters such as deadly earthquakes and floods, further compounding its difficulties. With the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Haiti has witnessed vigilante groups opposing gangs, leading to a collapse of democracy. In response, the United Nations has called for an international peacekeeping force to restore order.

Due to the prevailing instability, Les Grenadiers were forced to live and train outside of Haiti during the World Cup qualifying rounds. Despite these challenges, the team overcame every obstacle and secured their place in the tournament by defeating Chile 2-1 in February. What makes their journey even more remarkable is the lack of corporate support they receive. Nevertheless, hardship has forged a resilient and unwavering spirit within this team.

In conclusion, while dominant teams receive rightful recognition, it is important to acknowledge the unyielding determination exhibited by underdog teams like Les Grenadiers. Their journey embodies the strength and resilience of a nation that continues to overcome immense challenges.
