Colleen Hoover Grapples with Feelings of Guilt Surrounded by Overnight Success

  • In a recent interview with Time, Colleen Hoover discussed her career and opened up about her feelings of “almost shame” and guilt about her fast success.
  • After publishing her first book, Hoover became a New York Times bestseller in just seven months.

In a recent interview, Colleen Hoover reflected on her unconventional journey to success.

During the Book Bonanza festival, organized by her nonprofit The Bookworm Box, Hoover spoke with Lucy Feldman of Time about her work and her new chapter as an empty nester.

One topic that came up was Hoover’s feelings of “almost shame” regarding her rapid rise to success.

She expressed her belief that she hadn’t “paid her dues” like many other talented writers who have been striving to find their audience for years.

“I know I can’t compare my story to other people’s, but the more I tell it, the more guilty I feel,” she shared with Feldman.

In 2012, Hoover self-published her debut novel “Slammed” while living in a single-wide trailer with her husband and three children.

Within seven months of its publication, “Slammed” became a New York Times bestseller, launching Hoover’s career as an author.

She has since written over 20 books, including the popular “It Ends With Us,” which is being adapted into a movie starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.

Hoover garnered some criticism earlier this year for considering a coloring book based on “It Ends With Us,” a book that addresses domestic violence. However, her publisher ultimately decided not to pursue the project.

Despite the controversies, Hoover’s impact on the publishing industry was recognized when she was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in April 2023.
