Collaboration of Commercial Real Estate Firms to Foster Black Student-Athlete Recruitment

Cedric Bobo, founder of Project Destined, a social impact platform, has introduced a new program aimed at helping Black student-athletes transition into the commercial real estate market. The program provides paid internships and training in finance, with a focus on real estate investing. It has already garnered support from major real estate firms, including Boston Properties, Greystar, CBRE, Equity Residential, Fifth Wall, JLL, Skanska, Vornado, and Walker & Dunlop.

Project Destined has already trained over 5,000 participants from 350 universities worldwide and partnered with 250 real estate firms. Now, the program is specifically targeting Black student-athletes. In partnership with the Black Student-Athlete Summit, Project Destined is offering paid virtual internships to 100 student-athletes from nine Division I schools, providing them with training, exposure to real estate transactions, pitch competitions, and networking opportunities.

Darius Livingston, a former football player and participant in the program, shared his experience of transitioning into the real estate industry. He acknowledged that professional sports may not be a realistic option for everyone and expressed gratitude for the opportunities Project Destined provided. Livingston now works as an acquisitions and development associate at Catalyst Housing Group, a real estate development firm supporting the new partnership.

Cedric Bobo emphasized the importance of ownership, encouraging student-athletes to create change in their communities through real estate ownership and management. The program aims to help student-athletes realize their potential beyond sports and understand that they deserve more than just athletic opportunities.

The expansion of Project Destined has received financial support from various real estate firms, including BGO, Brookfield, Catalyst Housing Group, Dune Real Estate Partners, Jemcor Development Partners, Landspire Group, Marcus & Millichap, Virtu Investments, and The Vistria Group. Jordan Moss, CEO of Catalyst and a former student-athlete, stated that this initiative will provide tangible pathways for Black student-athletes to pursue careers in commercial real estate.

In addition to its work with student-athletes, Project Destined is collaborating with the NBA and the WNBA to offer more options for professional athletes after their sports careers.

Darius Livingston believes that athletes make excellent employees due to their competitive nature and desire to excel. He emphasized their dedication and willingness to outwork their opportunities.
