- Coco Gauff rose to tennis stardom at a young age by defeating Venus Williams. They now play doubles together.
- In an interview with Insider, Gauff shared the best advice she received from Williams during the 2021 French Open.
- “On the court, it’s important to acknowledge and express your emotions,” Williams told her.
Coco Gauff has been a fan of Serena and Venus Williams since she was 4 years old. Her victory against Venus at the age of 15 propelled her to become a tennis sensation.
In a recent interview with Insider, Gauff discussed her partnership with Barilla ahead of the US Open and shared her experience playing doubles with one of her idols.
The 19-year-old has learned valuable lessons from Venus, and she revealed that the best life advice she received from her was during the 2021 French Open.
Gauff recalled, “I was playing doubles with her and I broke a racket in front of Venus. And she was just like, ‘You’re good, let your emotions happen. It’s OK to feel what you’re feeling and let them exit your body — don’t hold them in. On the court, your feelings are valid and it’s OK to show them.'”
During the tournament, Gauff made history by becoming the youngest woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in 15 years. She also became the youngest American to reach the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam since Venus at the 1997 US Open.
Reflecting on her first win against Venus during the 2019 Wimbledon tournament, Gauff said, “I think life is a domino effect. I don’t know where I would be now if that domino didn’t happen or if it was pulled out. But I believe that was a pivotal moment in my life.”
“I love that she always elevates herself,” Gauff said about Serena during the 2022 US Open media day. “As a woman, a Black woman in the world, sometimes you settle for less. I feel like Serena taught me that she never settled for less. I can’t recall a moment in her career or life where she settled for less.”
In addition to their tennis partnership, Gauff revealed that she and Venus exchange hair advice, and Serena teaches her dance moves.
In previous interviews, Gauff has praised Serena for being a major inspiration in her tennis career.
Gauff, who advanced to the second round of the 2023 US Open on Monday, also shared her pre-match superstition with Insider. She always eats the same pasta before a big tournament, but she no longer includes mushrooms in her penne with chicken, spinach, and Parmesan cheese.
“They make my stomach kind of hurt a little bit, but also I don’t know if it’s just in my head sometimes,” she said with a playful laugh. “I’m usually not superstitious, except for that.”
