CNBC Survey: Investors Predict 2023 Gain Despite Bear Market Bounce, Anticipate Recession in 2022

A majority of Wall Street investors have expressed concerns about the stock market’s 2023 gains and believe that it could experience further declines due to the increasing risk of a recession. This is according to the latest investor survey conducted by CNBC Delivering Alpha.

The survey involved approximately 300 participants including chief investment officers, equity strategists, portfolio managers, and CNBC contributors who manage money. It was conducted this week.

More than 60% of respondents in the survey believe that the stock market’s gains in 2023 are merely a temporary rebound in a bear market, and they anticipate further challenges ahead. However, 39% of investors view this as the start of a new bull market.

In the past month alone, the S&P 500 has experienced a decline of over 5%, reducing its 2023 gains to 11%. This drop can be attributed to various factors such as the Federal Reserve’s indication of prolonged higher interest rates, which led to increased bond yields. The market also had to contend with a surge in crude oil prices and a 10-week winning streak for the dollar.
