Climate Minister of Austria Encourages Citizens to Embrace Tattoos for Environmental Awareness

The Austrian government is not only promoting tattoos, but also rewarding those who choose to get one. In fact, they are offering a special reward for getting a specific tattoo. Climate officials have set up temporary tattoo shops at two festivals where the first three individuals willing to get inked with the word “Klimaticket” will receive a free year of train travel across Austria. The “Klimaticket,” or “climate ticket,” is part of the country’s initiative to reduce the use of motorized individual transportation for the benefit of the environment. Six people have taken up the government’s offer to get the tattoo, while approximately a quarter of a million people have purchased the annual pass for about $1,200, as reported by euronews.

A member of Parliament criticized Climate Minister Leonore Gewesseler, stating, “Offering people money for putting advertising under their skin reveals an unacceptable view of humanity from a government minister,” as highlighted by UPI. Gewessler responded by noting that the tattoos are only available to individuals over the age of 18 and are given during daylight hours to minimize the chances of an intoxicated person opting in. However, she faced further criticism, with one tweet questioning, “What will come next? A free heat pump for anyone who tattoos Gewessler’s name on their forehead?” according to the Telegraph. Euronews mentions that there are no more pop-up events scheduled for the rest of the year. (Read more tattoo stories.)
