Client Details Encounter That Sent Shivers Down Rex Heuermann’s Spine

On the morning of July 14, real estate agent Jeffrey St. Arromand received a distressing phone call from a client. The client had heard on the news that the suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer had been caught, and it turned out to be someone they had worked closely with on a Brooklyn brownstone project named Rex Heuermann. St. Arromand recalls his interactions with Heuermann, but it was his client’s encounter with him that left her in shock.

The client had worked with Heuermann multiple times in the past. He worked on renovating her longtime Crown Heights home and was responsible for obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy for the property. St. Arromand remembers meeting with Heuermann and his client at her place, where they discussed the project. On one occasion, the client even drove Heuermann home, which led to a conversation about the Gilgo Beach murders, a chilling topic in retrospect.

Throughout the process of selling her home, the client found Heuermann’s behavior increasingly difficult. He constantly argued with the plumber and questioned his work, displaying odd behavior. He would often say things like, “I’m not doing anything to get a fine or open an investigation of my license.” Eventually, the client decided not to have Heuermann attend the closing of the property, and he had to pick up the payment separately.

According to St. Arromand, the home eventually closed to a celebrity buyer, but due to a secret trust, he cannot disclose their identity.

The arrest of Rex Heuermann in connection with the unsolved Gilgo Beach murders has led to a flood of tips. The Gilgo Beach murders involved the discovery of more than 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway between December 2010 and April 2011. The victims were mainly petite female sex workers with green or hazel eyes, but there were also exceptions, including a 2-year-old girl and a young Asian man.

The victims included Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, an unidentified Asian man, “Peaches” and her daughter, and Jane Doe No. 7. Shannan Gilbert, a Craigslist escort, also went missing in the area and her body was later discovered in a marsh near Oak Beach.

The arrest of Heuermann has brought closure to the victims’ families, but the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders is ongoing.
