Clarke’s Brilliant Double Eases Sunderland to Victory, Further Exacerbating Sheffield Wednesday’s Troubles | Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday’s start to the Championship season has now become the joint-worst after nine games in history, following their loss to Sunderland at Hillsborough on Friday night.

Sunderland took control of the match before half-time, with Dan Ballard’s header and two goals from Jack Clarke, including one from a penalty. The off-field situation at Wednesday is in disarray, as chairman Dejphon Chansiri announced earlier in the day that he would not be investing any additional funds into the club.

Xisco Muñoz made two changes to Sheffield Wednesday’s lineup from their 3-0 loss to Swansea, with George Byers and Callum Paterson included in the starting XI.

Sunderland’s manager Tony Mowbray made one change following their 1-0 defeat to Cardiff, with Patrick Roberts replacing Abdoullah Ba.

The away side capitalized on their first two chances of the game. Ballard scored with a header from Alex Pritchard’s corner after five minutes, and just three minutes later, Clarke showcased his skill by driving towards the goal from the left and delivering a precise strike into the bottom corner.

John Buckley attempted a shot from outside the box, which was saved by Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. Anthony Musaba also had a chance, but his curling effort went over the bar.

The third goal came in the 31st minute after Bambo Diaby fouled Mason Burstow in the box. Clarke confidently converted the penalty, securing his second goal of the night and seventh of the season. Impressively, six of his goals have been scored away from the Stadium of Light.

Frustrated home fans called for both the manager and chairman to leave the club, with some already heading for the exits.

In the second half, Pol Valentín made an impressive run down the right-hand side, delivering a cross to Paterson who had his shot saved by Patterson. Jobe Bellingham came close to scoring a fourth goal, but his long-range effort narrowly missed the target.

Despite bringing on forwards Ashley Fletcher and Djeidi Gassama in the closing stages, Sunderland comfortably fended off the majority of Wednesday’s attacks for the rest of the game. The damage had already been done in the first 30 minutes.

With this result, Sunderland rises to fourth place in the Championship table ahead of Saturday’s fixtures, while Wednesday remains at the bottom, collecting only two points from their first nine games.
