After a brief stint at a Roman Catholic seminary, his journey continued at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he became one of the pioneering young Black men to integrate the institution. It was during his senior year in the spring of 1971 when he received a letter from Yale Law School. Initially fearing it to be a rejection, he was elated to discover that one of the nation’s most prestigious law schools was extending an invitation to him.
In his autobiography, Justice Thomas recalled the overwhelming excitement he felt, as his heart raced and his spirits soared upon receiving the news.
At Yale, he found himself among only 12 Black students in his law school class, having been admitted under an affirmative action plan introduced that year. Yet, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his white classmates viewed him as a mere token. This belief was further reinforced by his inability to secure the coveted law firm job he had longed for.
Reflecting on this experience, he later wrote, “I had graduated from one of the most esteemed law schools in America, but the racial preferences had diminished the true value of my achievement.” Departing Yale as a new father, he carried a mix of emotions, including frustration, disappointment, anxiety about the future, the burden of student loans, providing for his child, and finding a place to call home.
