- Lawyers representing Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the Idaho murders, have requested a ban on courtroom cameras.
- They have made the bizarre claim that the cameras have been “focused on his fly.”
- The trial for the murders of four University of Idaho students, in which Kohberger is the defendant, has been indefinitely delayed.
Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the Idaho murders, is seeking a ban on cameras in the courtroom, claiming that they have been inappropriately focused on his crotch.
In a motion filed by his attorney, Anne Taylor, a request was made to the judge to remove cameras, stating that they have provided “fodder” for social media users in previous court appearances, as reported by ABC News.
“Mr. Kohberger is entitled to defend himself against capital criminal charges without cameras focused on his fly,” wrote his attorney in the motion.
Kohberger is awaiting trial for the murders of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
The trial, originally scheduled for October, has been indefinitely postponed after Kohberger waived his right to a speedy trial.
In the motion filed on August 24, his lawyer stated that the media had failed to comply with a previous request to not solely focus on Kohberger.
They argued that this “continued exclusive focus” fueled social media users who lack journalistic integrity and potentially have an even greater reach than traditional media outlets, according to ABC.
His lawyers claimed that photos of him in the courtroom were a “blatant violation” and that headlines about the case were “sensationalistic and prejudicial.”
The judge has yet to make a ruling on the request, and a hearing to address it is set for September 13, as reported by The Independent.
Several media outlets, including the Associated Press, have filed a motion requesting that cameras be allowed in future hearings, stating that camera coverage is not solely focused on the defendant and provides a wide range of coverage on the overall case, according to Newsweek.
Prosecutors have announced their intention to seek the death penalty against Kohberger, citing his “utter disregard for human life,” as reported by Newsweek.
