On Monday afternoon, the City Council committee will vote on the duration of the “special permit” extension for Madison Square Garden (MSG) to continue operating above Penn Station. In this regard, it is recommended to grant a short-term extension for several reasons.
This month, the MTA, NJ Transit, and Amtrak raised concerns about the evacuation plan for MSG and the station in the event of a major emergency. They have demanded significant modifications that could cost MSG’s owners hundreds of millions of dollars. The MTA has even threatened to use eminent domain to forcibly remove MSG if necessary.
Considering the Dolan family’s reputation for being fighters, if the MTA pursues this course of action, a fierce legal battle can be expected.
Currently, the Dolans have requested an indefinite extension of the “special permit,” which is unlikely to be granted. The loss of Manhattan’s only major concert venue and sports arena would be undesirable for New Yorkers, especially considering that the threat of relocating the Knicks was instrumental in securing the Dolans a profitable tax exemption for MSG.
Furthermore, it is not economically feasible for the public to finance the construction of a new MSG, as some advocates of the “Move the Garden” campaign suggest.
