Citibank Faces Subpoena from Jim Jordan Alleging Information Sharing with FBI

Citibank has been issued a subpoena by a congressional subcommittee led by the GOP due to concerns about potential information sharing with the FBI. The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, chaired by Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), has demanded documentation from Citibank after deeming their voluntary commitment insufficient.

In a subpoena cover letter addressed to Sunil Garg, CEO of Citibank North America, Jordan states that evidence has been obtained indicating that a major financial institution provided the FBI with private financial data without proper legal process. The subpoena requests relevant documents and communication pertaining to the subcommittee’s investigation into major banks sharing data with the bureau.

Jordan refers to testimony he previously mentioned in a letter dated June 12, where he stated that Bank of America provided the FBI with information about individuals who had conducted transactions in the Washington, DC area between January 5-7, 2021, without legal process. The committee has now discovered evidence suggesting that at least one major financial institution, Citibank, also shared private financial data with the FBI without the required legal process.

Concerned by this testimony, the committee has reached out to other major financial institutions, including Citibank, to determine if they were involved in similar conduct. Jordan further claims that documents obtained by the Judiciary Committee and the weaponization subcommittee indicate that Citibank may have shared customer information with federal law enforcement, even when the customers had no direct connection to criminal activity. Some of these documents suggest that a Citibank representative participated in Zoom calls with the FBI to discuss the best approach to information sharing following the January 6 Capitol riots.

Other banks that Jordan sought voluntary cooperation from on June 12 include JPMorgan, PNC, US Bancorp, Wells Fargo, and Truist Financial Corporation. Additionally, the Judiciary Committee, headed by Jordan, has recently issued subpoenas to the heads of the FBI and Justice Department, seeking documents related to alleged government coordination with Big Tech in relation to content moderation policies.
