WASHINGTON — House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a subpoena to Citibank on Thursday, requesting information about whether the bank shared customer transaction data with law enforcement in relation to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

CNBC exclusively obtained the subpoena, which comes after Jordan previously asked several financial institutions, including Citibank, to voluntarily provide this information. The other banks include Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, PNC, Truist, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo.

Citibank is the only bank so far that has not complied voluntarily with the committee’s request, according to a source familiar with the investigation. The bank’s lawyers stated that they would only comply with a subpoena. CNBC reached out to Citibank for comment but has not received an immediate response.

This wider investigation into whether banks handed over data to assist in the investigation and prosecution of the January 6 rioters began when an FBI whistleblower revealed that Bank of America had voluntarily provided a list of individuals who made transactions using BofA credit or debit cards in the Washington area between January 5 and January 7, 2021.

BofA did not deny the whistleblower’s claim and stated earlier this year that the bank follows all applicable laws and responds narrowly to law enforcement requests. Now, the committee seeks to determine if other banks have done the same.
