Cillian Murphy Realized He Wasn’t the Perfect Fit for Batman in the ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy

  • Cillian Murphy, star of “Oppenheimer,” originally auditioned for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins.”
  • Despite knowing he wasn’t right for the role, Murphy tried on Val Kilmer’s Batsuit for his screen test and was later cast as the villain, Scarecrow.

In the last 20 years, Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy have collaborated on six projects, with their first being “Batman Begins” in 2005.

Murphy, now 47, portrayed the menacing Scarecrow opposite Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne in the revolutionary reimagining of Batman.

However, Murphy initially tried out for the role of Batman himself, and footage of his screen test can be seen in a documentary about Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

During an appearance on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, Murphy revealed that he always knew he wasn’t suited for the role.

When asked why he felt uncertain about playing Batman, Murphy explained, “I don’t think I have the physical presence to portray Bruce Wayne.”

Murphy also shared his experience of trying on Val Kilmer’s Batsuit during the audition process, acknowledging the challenge of fitting into the costume.

Despite realizing he wasn’t the right fit for the billionaire superhero, Murphy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to wear the Batsuit and audition for Christopher Nolan.

The actor praised Christian Bale for his transformative portrayal of Bruce Wayne in the “Dark Knight” trilogy, stating that Bale truly defined the role of Batman.

“Oppenheimer” will be released in theaters on Friday.
